Blair L. Fredrickson, owner and designer with Landforms Design in Bountiful, started his career as a builder and brings that unique perspective to every home he designs.
"I came up swinging a hammer and that has taught me about the best way to build a home," Blair says.
The best way - and the way that has led Landforms Design to continued growth since 1984 - is to get a good set of drawings that allow the builder to build what's on the page, a must for builders, subcontractors and homeowners.
"Changes in the field cost a fortune in time and money, so drawing the plans right from the beginning will save everyone a lot," he says.
Drawing the plans right from the beginning involves communication with the client in all stages of design. This approach, in Blair's opinion, is the only way to ensure drawings are done right from the beginning.
Blair's approach tries to protect a project from going over budget. He feels it is his responsibility as a designer to stay within the budget and has an open relationship with his clients, which allows him to discuss all aspects of building candidly.
This honest approach leads to shorter approval times, fewer change orders and a smoother building experience. Blair builds not just great plans but friendships. His way is a breath of fresh air and he's passionate about his work.
For homeowners not interested in a start-from-scratch, custom home design, Landforms Design sells preexisting home designs that can be revised somewhat to match individual preferences. With 23 years of experience, Blair typically has some sort of home design that matches a person's personality and offers a nice starting point.
Landforms Design now has 10 employees and a new office in St. George. The St. George office will allow Landforms' southern Utah customers the same great service the rest of Utah has enjoyed for years.
Blair is still the company's primary designer, but his auto cad techs, customer service representatives and other support staff members make the planning process quick and easy. The front office staff help answer preliminarily questions and discuss what Landforms has to offer, while also offering an initial evaluation of the client's specific needs. Landforms utilizes a conference center that allows potential clients to look at plans and get basic questions answered, and see some computer slideshows of selected houses.
